Workplace Mediation FAQs

We understand that you may have some queries about how workplace mediation works.
We’ve answered some of the most Frequently Asked Questions below.

Workplace Mediation is a facilitative style of mediation dedicated towards resolving disputes for two parties and whole teams. Workplace mediation helps parties understand their working relationships and identify improved ways of working. The vast majority of cases end with some sort of future-focused agreement being written up.

Yes, workplace mediation can be conducted with two, three or more people. Workplace team mediation is very effective in addressing cultural and other broader group issues.

The vast majority of workplace mediation cases will end with some sort of written agreement. Even if an agreement isn’t reached on the day, mediation at work can still be helpful in re-opening lines of communication, which can lead to improved working relationships further down the line.

Our workplace mediation service can be delivered either online or face-to-face. If delivered face-to-face, this will typically take place at your organisation’s site or office, but can be done at any venue with access to two quiet rooms. This must be organised by the referrer prior to the mediation day.

We strongly suggest that parties attend workplace mediation alone, in order to promote open and honest dialogue, and to take full ownership of the conversation and next steps. If a support person is required, that has to be agreed to by the other party, and their role is one of silent observers in the mediation room.

For two-party disputes, we schedule 3 hours for the joint session. We recommend the 4th hour be set aside to allow participants a break before returning to work.
For team or group disputes, multiple days and perhaps multiple mediators (depending on numbers) may be required.

Mediation can definitely be delivered online.

Yes, we ask parties to sign a Confidentiality Agreement on the day of the mediation to make sure that whatever is said does not leave the room. In addition, all notes related to the case are disposed of upon completion. If the workplace or referrer has requested a report, that will be discussed with the parties in advance.

Yes, people cannot be forced to take part in workplace mediation. There needs to be a willingness to participate and a preparedness to reach some kind of resolution that both sides can live with. If parties were to be coerced or forced to take part on the day, this would hinder the result of the mediation, lessen people's commitment to the process, and ultimately make it less likely that they would arrive at a successful conclusion.

Generally the workplace  pays for workplace mediation (as opposed to each party having to pay). Two-party workplace mediations can range from $2,500 to $4,000 depending on complexity and number of parties. We also run workplace mediations for teams, cost for which depends on approach taken.
